Des découvertes supervisées sur YouTube
Depuis ses débuts, YouTube a été conçu pour les utilisateurs de plus de 13 ans, et nous avons toujours recommandé aux parents d’accompagner leurs enfants s’ils choisissent de les laisser explorer nos contenus. En 2015, nous avons créé YouTube Kids, une plateforme plus sécurisée qui permet aux enfants d’explorer leurs centres d’intérêts avec un contrôle parental adapté. Cependant, les parents d’enfants plus âgés nous ont rappelé que les adolescents ont des besoins différents, qui ne sont pas entièrement satisfaits par nos produits. À mesure que les enfants grandissent, ils développent une curiosité insatiable et ils ont besoin de voler de leurs propres ailes pour découvrir de nouveaux moyens d’apprendre, de créer et de trouver leur place.
Au cours de l’année dernière, nous avons travaillé avec des parents et des experts du numérique, du développement de l’enfant et de la protection de l’enfance du monde entier, dans le but de proposer une solution aux parents des adolescents et préadolescents. Dans les mois qui viennent, nous allons lancer une nouvelle expérience en bêta pour permettre aux parents de mettre en place un compte Google supervisé par lequel leurs enfants pourront accéder à YouTube. Cette découverte supervisée comportera des paramètres de contenu ainsi que des fonctionnalités limitées pour les ados et les préados. Dans un premier temps, des familles avec des enfants n’ayant pas l'âge minimal requis pourront tester ces comptes en bêta et nous donner leur avis pendant que nous continuons à développer et à améliorer cette expérience.
Plusieurs options de contenu pour les parents sur YouTube
Nous savons que chaque parent a une vision différente de l’éducation, mais aussi que chaque enfant est unique et se développe à son propre rythme. C’est pourquoi nous comptons offrir aux parents la possibilité de choisir parmi trois paramètres de contenu différents sur YouTube.
● Découvrir : pour les enfants qui ont passé l’âge de YouTube Kids et qui sont prêts à explorer YouTube, cette option inclura une grande variété de vidéos au contenu adapté aux plus de 9 ans, dont des vlogs, des tutoriels, des vidéos de gaming, des clips musicaux, des reportages d’actualité, du contenu éducatif etc.
● Plus de découvertes : comprenant du contenu généralement adapté aux plus de 13 ans, cette option donnera accès à un plus grand nombre de vidéos ainsi qu’au streaming en direct dans les mêmes catégories que l’option « Explorer ».
● La plupart des contenus YouTube : cette option autorise l’accès à presque toutes les vidéos sur YouTube, hormis celles soumises à une limite d’âge. Ce contenu inclut des sujets sensibles qui ne sont pas forcément appropriés pour les jeunes adolescents.
Cette option est conçue pour les parents qui pensent que leurs enfants sont prêts à explorer l’univers des vidéos YouTube. Nous ferons appel à différents outils pour choisir les vidéos à inclure : contributions des utilisateurs, apprentissage automatique et évaluations des utilisateurs. Nous sommes conscients que nos systèmes ne seront pas parfaits et qu’il nous faudra du temps pour les perfectionner.
Nous recommandons aux parents de continuer d’accompagner et de guider leurs enfants dans leur découverte de YouTube. Pour aider les parents à entamer ce processus, nous avons élaboré un guide en partenariat avec National PTA, Parent Zone et Be Internet Awesome. Nous lancerons également une campagne de sensibilisation permanente qui fera intervenir des créateurs pour aborder, entre autres sujets, des thèmes comme le harcèlement, la désinformation et le bien-être numérique.
Offrir de nouvelles fonctionnalités aux familles
Il est important de trouver le bon équilibre entre l’autonomie que l’on offre aux adolescents et préadolescents et le droit de regard que l’on laisse aux parents sur les activités de ces derniers. En plus de choisir les contenus autorisés, les parents pourront contrôler l’historique de recherche et de visionnage directement depuis les paramètres du compte de leur enfant. Ils disposeront également d’autres outils de contrôle parental proposés par l’application Family Link, qui permettent par exemple d’établir des limites de temps d’utilisation pour chaque application. Nous ajouterons de nouvelles fonctionnalités de ce type au fil du temps, notamment des outils pour bloquer des contenus.
Sur YouTube, l’expérience d’un enfant sous contrôle parental est semblable à une utilisation classique, à l’exception de certaines fonctionnalités désactivées pour des raisons d’âge. Par exemple, nous n’affichons pas d’annonces ou même d’annonces personnalisées sur les pages de certaines catégories de contenus. Lorsqu’un enfant se connecte sur l’application, il lui est impossible d’effectuer des achats in-app et de publier du contenu ou des commentaires. Toutefois, comme la liberté d’expression et les interactions sont essentielles à YouTube et au développement des enfants, nous allons travailler avec des parents et des experts pour inclure progressivement ces fonctionnalités en maintenant une limite d’âge et un contrôle parental.
Développer YouTube Kids
Même si nous développons actuellement cette nouvelle expérience supervisée, destinée aux parents qui considèrent que leurs enfants sont assez matures pour utiliser YouTube, nous pensons qu’il est préférable de continuer de proposer YouTube Kids aux plus jeunes, afin qu’ils puissent se divertir en toute autonomie dans un environnement sécurisé.
Aujourd’hui, YouTube Kids est disponible dans plus de 80 pays et compte plus de 35 millions d’utilisateurs par semaine. Nous allons continuer d’étendre sa disponibilité, d’ajouter de nouvelles fonctionnalités et tâcher de proposer de nouveaux outils de contrôle parental. Nous travaillons par exemple sur une fonctionnalité demandée par de nombreuses familles, qui permettrait de créer une sélection de vidéos et de chaînes issues de la plateforme principale de YouTube afin de les proposer à leurs enfants via YouTube Kids.
Nous savons qu’il nous reste un long chemin à parcourir pour offrir une expérience parfaitement aboutie aux parents d’adolescents et de préadolescents. Nous espérons que, sur le long terme, notre travail permettra aux enfants plus âgés de bénéficier d’un environnement adapté pour explorer leurs centres d’intérêt, développer de nouveaux talents et tisser des liens avec les communautés qui partagent leurs passions, tout en donnant aux parents la possibilité d’accompagner leurs enfants dans leur épanouissement en ligne.
